It’s much easier to engage students when you’re introducing new material. Every year I try to deliver revision lessons that really add value, but it can be difficult to find inspiring resources. I’d be interested to see your recommendations too. I’ve delivered this lesson a few times and it’s always gone really well. Each pair of students is given a picture and 20 questions. They have to bring me a correct answer to move on to the next question. The first few questions are fairly easy so it’s fast-paced, but it quickly slows down as the challenge increases. There’s plenty to get them thinking and the activity takes a good 40 minutes. Afterwards there are a number of discussion points eg questions where students took different approaches , so it nicely fills a one hour lesson. My students really enjoy it.

One day, back in , I was crossing over to Jersey on the ferry, and as we pulled out, there was another ferry pulling in, and on it there was a girl waiting to get off. A white dress she had on. She was carrying a white parasol. I only saw her for one second. She didn’t see me at all, but I’ll bet a month hasn’t gone by since that I haven’t thought of that girl.
How can you use models, critique, and descriptive feedback to review and improve teacher work, such as lesson plans, expedition plans, or protocol facilitation? When leaders themselves model this practice, teachers are more likely to implement it in their own classrooms.
Below are over thirty questions and activities to get your ESL students talking, reading and writing about dating. Although ESL students tend to absolutely love just sitting around talking with a group about romance and dating, there are plenty more fun activities you can do that involve reading writing, playing games, listening to music and watching videos as well as having conversation.
Discussing Dating Split your students up into groups of to discuss the following questions: How does dating work in your country? How do you decide whom to date? Where do you meet people to date? How do you begin dating? What topics do you think are acceptable to discuss on a first date? What kinds of things do you do on a date?

Chalk and talk has little impact on my year 10 GCSE class so I looked into different ways of delivering these topics making them fun and memorable for all abilities. Using speed dating is a way of engaging students making learning independent, competitive and explicit. Each class that I have used this with has loved it and it is quick and easy to prepare. The students do all the hard work and have fun at the same time.
Preparation Pick a topic that has 4 or 5 sub topics. I have used lifestyle factors that affect sporting performance and split it into Drugs, Stress, Sleep, Smoking and Social factors. Create a fact sheet with up to 8 facts about each topic — You can adapt this to suit the ability of your class using key words, pictures and bullet points for less able students and paragraphs for a more able class. Again you can adapt this depending on the ability of your class. Explain the concept of speed dating and set the scene.

She knew that some people would find it hard to understand the logic behind the idea, and she thought that if the rent problem and the Georgist solution to it were put into the concrete form of a game, it might be easier to demonstrate. She was granted the patent for the game in January The Landlord’s Game became one of the first board games to use a “continuous path”, without clearly defined start and end spaces on its board. His students made their own boards, and taught the game to others.
By this time, the hand-made games became known simply as Monopoly. This version, unlike her first patent drawing , included named streets though the versions published in based on her first patent also had named streets. Magie sought to regain control over the plethora of hand-made games. Layman, in turn, learned the game from the Thun brothers who later tried to sell copies of the game commercially, but were advised by an attorney that the game could not be patented, as they were not its inventors.
After the demand for the game increased, Darrow contacted a printing company, Patterson and White, which printed the designs of the property spaces on square carton boards. Darrow’s game board designs included elements later made famous in the version eventually produced by Parker Brothers, including black locomotives on the railroad spaces, the car on “Free Parking”, the red arrow for “Go”, the faucet on “Water Works”, the light bulb on “Electric Company”, and the question marks on the “Chance” spaces, though many of the actual icons were created by a hired graphic artist.
They rejected it in a letter dated May 31, Schwarz in New York City.

My class were studying a topic on the organisation of sport in the UK and were struggling to get to grips with all of the various organisational bodies and their roles. I therefore decided to have an interim revision session with a difference and used speed dating as the vehicle for this. I created seven questions based on what they had already learnt.

Sep 9th, Posts: It’s called ‘Speed Dating‘ and is basically exactly what it says on the tin. It lasted about 40 minutes with me, and that will depend on the size of your class, ability, etc. Start off by making sure everyone knows what ‘speed dating‘ means. So this is how you do it There are 14 character cards you will need to make more if you have a larger class ; 7 girls and 7 guys.
Shuffle them up and hand them out so each student has a card – male characters don’t necessarily have to go to the boys, and vice versa! The aim is for each person to find their ‘perfect match’. Also, if you have an uneven number of students, you can sit in to make it even. Make sure everyone has understood everything that’s written on their card.
Then sit them down along a row of tables, with the ‘guys’ on one side and the ‘girls’ on the other. Give them each a ‘Speed Dating Table’ to fill out as they go. Each pair should take about five minutes to find out about the person they’re sat with might want to go over things like ‘hello, what’s your name? After the five minutes, they should write down the name of that person, ‘yes’ or ‘no’ based on whether or not they think it’s a good match, and then give their reason eg.

Leaders of Their Own Learning: These ongoing feedback practices, which help us improve, are essential in nearly every field. Despite its prevalence in the world, this kind of on-the-job, on-the-spot feedback, based on strong models, is still strangely absent from many schools and classrooms.

Saturday, December 1, Standard Form of a Linear Equation Last week, my Algebra 1 students worked with linear equations in both slope intercept form and standard form. We practiced graphing equations in standard form by converting to slope intercept form and by graphing intercepts. At first, my students did not like graphing intercepts. However, after several problems, that became their method of choice.
Here are pictures of our Interactive Notebook entries over Standard Form. On the right, I created a mini-booklet of sorts to help students organize their notes on standard form. I wanted students to know exactly where to look for the steps in solving and where to find a completed example.

Lesson Objectives. Students will. Or you could set up a brief activity called “speed idea dating,” where students sit across from one another and for 30 seconds one side of the table explains where he/she is in their drafting process; after 30 seconds the other side of the table gets a turn. Consider going to the Writing Center for.
In this lesson, students get familiar with the concept of throwaway culture and are encouraged to think about its consequences, reasons, and assess the potential implications of governments or educators trying to combat the trend of throwing things out instead of repairing them. To learn more about the topic before the lesson, you might want to read this article as well. The lesson plan comes with two PDF files: Worksheet 5 pages and answer key 1 page This serves as a guideline for the teacher as well.
Discussion questions You might display it on the screen or print it, and use one of the discussion techniques I describe later in the post. What would you do? The aim of this stage of the lesson is to see how much your students even think about the concept of repairing things instead of throwing them out. In order to see their reactions to the 4 images in the worksheet, you might ask them to: Before you read The aim of these vocabulary activities is to pre-teach key terms necessary to understand the reading texts that comes later.
Students fill in the gaps in the text individually. Ask As to discuss the next two questions with the person sitting on their left. The aim here is to make sure students work with different partners during the lesson. Given the U-shape of desks in my classroom the pattern of students turning to their left and right works.
This is the earliest documented use of boxing gloves. In Olympic terms, it was first introduced in the 23rd Olympiad , BC. The boxers would wind leather thongs around their hands in order to protect them. There were no rounds and boxers fought until one of them acknowledged defeat or could not continue.
This year I am going to incorporate the Spaced revision into my lessons with my students along with some retrieval practice and the usual randomness. The 2 hours is broken down into 4x 30 minute blocks which should not be completed one after the other, as shown below: Ideally the student should chunk their revision timetable into these 30 minute blocks and take a full break every hour for at least 15 minutes. This prevents cramming which in turn leads to feelings of being overwhelmed and getting nowhere.
It is with this in mind that my revision lessons will focus on step 3 — Transformation Activities. I chose this step as it is an opportunity for the students to use me as a resource. One thing that I try not to do in my revision lessons is reteach a topic, instead I am there to help the students on the areas and skills that they feel they need support. The structure of my lessons will be as follows: I have created a Revision tracking sheet which will help students to see the progress they are making and used alongside the Eisenhower Matrix should help them feel that they are making progress.
The TA refers to the Transformation Activity. In this activity is where the student takes the topic they have been revising and turns it into something else.

Monday, December 9, Book Speed Dating: I’ve wanted to try it out for awhile now, and I finally went for it last week. I wanted to use a smaller “test” group before trying this with a class of 35 eighth graders, so I tried it with our resource reading classes first. These classes are designed for struggling readers and generally have fewer than ten students. Because of the nature of the class, the students do not tend to be readers, nor are they generally intrinsically-motivated to read.
I had the best results with the eighth grade class, who better understood all my dating jokes “sometimes you have to kiss some frogs”, “sometimes you have to throw that fish back in”, “if at first you don’t succeed”, etc. They really enjoyed this lesson, and my eighth grade library assistants, who saw the speed dating as they worked in the library, all asked me to do this with their classes, too.
So here is what I did: Decide how you want the tables set up. I had 9 tables with 4 chairs at each table. Each table was a different genre. For the reading resource classes, I chose high-interest genres such as horror, humor, manga, nonfiction, survival, romance, sports, and realistic fiction. I put books on each table to represent that genre.
Each table had a sign labeling the genre.
